On arriving at the Park Hotel, after ascertaining we had booked with last minute.com the surly, arrogant and thoroughly disinterested receptionist kept us waiting a considerable time. She then informed us we would be given a room in "another hotel we own in the same road" (The Corbigoe Hotel, 101, Belgrave Road) which was, she said, "better than the room you've booked." As we made our own way to room 9, we had to steer a careful course past numerous painters and decorators. On first inspection our room was of very dubious quality having, as it did, a filthy carpet, ancient and poorly maintained furniture and a bathroom which was in a shocking state of repair. Only one small towel was provided for our twin room; the Corbigoe receptionist begrudgingly promised us a second towel. Not wishing to prolong our stay at the hotel, we returned in the late evening. No more than 90 minutes after having gone to bed, my colleague awoke me in a state of considerable distress. A quick inspection of his duvet cover, pillow and bedding showed that his whole bed, as well as the wall next to it, was alive with large red insects. There were also very loud scratching noises which one can only assume were rodents. The whole hotel was clearly a health hazard and we left it within 30 minutes, catching the first train home. The next evening, my colleague, who was then on a business trip to Ireland, contacted me - he was covered from head to foot in insect bites and would have to cut short his business trip at considerable expense and inconvenience. After returning home, my colleague required medication and was incapacitated for some days and experienced considerable pain and discomfort. A week later, to clarify the facts prior to seeking legal advice, we went back to the Corbigoe Hotel. Despite having been standing outside the hotel for less than 3 minutes, two members of "staff" emerged and aggressively demanded to know what we were doing. My colleague has made a formal complaint to the environmental health department of Westminster City Council, because he does not want other unsuspecting guests to suffer the pain he went through. This was without doubt the filthiest and most disgusting hotel I have ever stayed in. Both my colleague and I have used last minute.com on a number of occasions previously and have always been impressed by the service we have been given. This ghastly nightmare of an experience will make us extremely wary of using the internet for booking accommodation in the future. Having been the person who made the booking, I feel responsible for its horrible consequences.
