In search for something a bit more special and wanting to avoid the coldness of hotels at all cost, we came across www. Vallettahouse. Com on the internet. A historic small size hideaway bang in the middle of the city, obviously furnished with love, down to the framed photgraphs and artwork.
the stone walls are stripped to reveal the golden hue of the local stone. Beware of banging your head on low doorways in the cellar/bathroom. Seems the ancestors were a short lot on this mediterranean island!
we arrived tired at the airport, so we did appreciate being taken to the house by victor (later transpired he was the owner's father) and the welcome package with a nice touch - local wine and lovely juicy oranges (why do we get such bland fruit in the uk?)
the house only accommodates 2 people, which makes it perfect for a romantic holiday. Being within the walls of valletta has its advantages as far as shops, museums, theatre etc.
on sunday we were woken up by a colourful parade that passed right by the house. We were told it was a weekly event but we are not sure. Knights and soldiers in period costume just looked great against the baroque architecture of the city.
